If there's one band that I could bring back to life
...it would be the unmistakable Queen.
While the sun hangs in the sky and the desert has sand While the waves crash in the sea and meet the land While there's a wind and the stars and the rainbow Till the mountains crumble into the plain Oh yes we'll keep on tryin' Tread that fine line Oh we'll keep on tryin' yeah Just passing our time
Was at NUS' University Cultural Centre over the weekend to watch the NUS Dance Synergy (which Lilian is part of) with Stentorian, and the couple of Queen's songs they danced to simply created that magical atmosphere. I say Queen's songs are some of the greatest songs to dance to.
While we live according to race, colour or creed While we rule by blind madness and pure greed Our lives dictated by tradition, superstition, false religion Through the eons, and on and on Oh yes we'll keep on tryin' We'll tread that fine line Oh we'll keep on tryin' Till the end of time
Freddie Mercury was, and still is, one heck of an icon.
Through the sorrow all through our splendour Don't take offence at my innuendo
I never really get what's so great about The Beatles anyway.
You can be anything you want to be Just turn yourself into anything you think that you could ever be Be free with your tempo, be free be free Surrender your ego - be free, be free to yourself
The Singapore Biennale 2006 (SB2006), Singapore's inaugural international biennale of contemporary art, will open to the public on 4 September 2006. This major international contemporary art exhibition will feature more 95 artists and artists collectives from over 38 countries and regions including Singapore.
As the anchor cultural event for Singapore 2006, SB2006 provides the platform for the presentation of international art in dialogue with Singapore and Asia. Singapore 2006 is the umbrella event where Singapore will play host to the Annual Meetings of the Boards of Governors of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank Group.
Snapshots from the Singapore Biennale 2006 Opening Party @The Padang last night:
The crowd...
Moc Moc & Mer Mer, the event mascots created by 2 Swiss artists. If you notice carefully, Mer Mer the Merlion has something rather disturbing protruding in front, heh.
The host, Najip Ali, was as entertaining as ever.
Open Burble, an interactive installation art created by Usman Haque, was a joy to watch. It's basically a tower of a thousand of balloons which illuminated as PM Lee Hsien Loong launched the event.
So the balloons were initially white...
And then it turned green...
And you can watch the rest of the transformation here (from 2 rabbitts into a condom, according to Najip Ali, haha).
Apart from Open Burble, there were fashion parade, boombox and death metal band performances going on last night. Didn't catch the Ministry of Sound DJ taking to the stage, though. Was dying to get some sleep.
I watched Forbidden City: Portrait of An Empress around this time of the year back in 2003 with my JC classmates (when everybody else was busy mugging for prelims, hahah), way before Dick Lee became a Singapore Idol judge and boy was it pure BRILLIANCE.
You'll love the classy backdrops.
You'll love the dynamic props.
You'll love the intricate costumes.
You'll love the strong leads.
You'll love the engaging scores.
Now will they understand?
I have been waiting for so long to see
The day the world will see what I have seen
Lord, let them see clearly
Now they will know the face that I have known
Reaching through the years
Will they feel the same way?
Will they know her now?
[Dragon Lady - Kate Morrison]
This was also the one play that turned me into a huge fan of Hossan Leong. He kicks major ass, I tell you.
And yes, when the musical reopens next week, a treat is most welcome :) A second helping would be nice.
Spent the whole day of yesterday running around Singapore (The Oriental Hotel - Asian Civilization Museum - Victoria Theatre - Supreme Court - Kampong Glam - Esplanade - Marina Square - Suntec - Copthorne King's Hotel) for S2006 Team Building Exercise and Ground Orientation.
At first the team building exercise felt like a real chore, since I hadn't exercised for as long as I could remember, plus it was a grossly sunny day. Yet thanks to our team I/Cs (i.e. the army guys) and members, we ended up having so much fun! Our team consisted of 4 NTU students, 2 SHATEC students (one of whom is a Korean; cool!) and 1 Singapore Poly student. We're pretty likely to be working as a team again come 11 September, stationed at Copthorne King's Hotel.
The whole team building exercise was sort of like the Amazing Race, with clues, games at each station and all, except that the fastest team to reach the finish line didn't necessarily win. And my team won the 3rd prize! Woohoo! Not too shabby at all, considering there were at least 30 teams altogether :) $100 worth of NYDC vouchers are ours! *beams*
After the team building exercise and another encounter with Nicholas Leong, CLEO's Most Eligible Bachelor 2006 *giggles*, we went to Copthorne King's Hotel for our ground orientation. The hotel managers are pretty nice, but I hate to think that I'm gonna need to take a cab every single morning for 2 weeks to reach the place, because my shift starts at friggin' 630 am. Bummer.
And today my whole body is aching.
And I haven't read my readings for next week, or finished last week's readings for that matter. Two weeks' worth of Singapore Standards of Auditing materials and KPMG auditing framework to comb through! Like how more boring can one's readings get, man.
And I need to plow through Thomson Medical Centre's annual report, do some financial ratio analysis, industry analysis, etc to decide how much money our group should invest in that company for our stock portfolio project.
If you had watched PM Lee Hsien Loong's National Day Rally a couple of days ago, you might have realized how appallingly true some of the things he said are. Like how kids nowadays have much shorter attention spans than those in the past. The way a typical youngster multitasks -doing homework in the PC, listening to the music, surfing the Internet and chatting with his friends online all at the same time- is a stark contrast to how as a student, he would sit down, stay in the room an shut everything out to focus on his work.
If you're one who flourishes with multitasking, then this era is good for you. If you're not, like me, I say blame how incapable we are in coping with the digital age. Sure, we may belong to a tech-savvy generation, but often too we turn into tech victims. The way we abuse the convenience of switching among various applications on the Net, for example, contributes to our inability in concentrating on one single thing for a considerable period of time.
Why, I realize my attention span is getting shorter and shorter over the years. During seminars, when I want to jot down important points that the prof has just uttered, I'll be stopping mid-sentence and finding myself asking the person sitting next to me, "What did he just say again?"
Even as I'm typing this, I have my Intermediate Accounting text open right in front of me. I'm supposed to have finished reading the chapter on Earnings per Share like, eons ago. And what happened? My short attention span made me turn to anything but the text after every 2 pages I managed to read. Geez, it's only freaking 24-pages long, for goodness' sake!
I could be discontent and chase the rainbow's end I might win much more but lose all that is mine I could be a lot but I know I'm not I'm content just with the riches that you bring I might shoot to win and commit the sin Of wanting more than I've already got I could run away but I'd rather stay In the warmth of your smile lighting up my day The one that makes me say
'Cause you're the best thing that ever happened to me or my world You're the best thing that ever happened - so don't go away
Finished To Kill A Mockingbird some weeks ago -the book is nothing short of a literature gem! Harper Lee's storytelling ability simply made me keep flipping the pages till the end, and it was like experiencing Little House on the Prairie all over again. Absolutely love it!
Right. Into the 2nd week of my final year in university. The three core subjects I'm doing this semester are all AA subjects, which means they are "real" accounting subjects. Which also means the readings can get REAL mind-numbingly boring most of the time.
AA 206 Business Valuation & Analysis -very useful, I must admit. The whole course is about reading financial statements between the lines to infer companies' real value, so at the end of the day, we'll be able to tell if a company's stocks are overvalued or undervalued.
AA 304 Assurance & Attestation -auditing, basically. Class has been interesting; we play games and all. So far so good, but I have a feeling it's gonna get harder faster than you can say "fairly stated".
AA 306 Risk Reporting & Analysis -wth. I just did a risk-related subject last semester. One could only take so much, man. I'm already lost by the second lecture. Pardon, did you just say consolidation journal entry?
LF 82 French Level 3 -my therapeutic sanctuary, as always. Tutor is M. Nicolas "How-many-times-must-I-say-this-you-mustn't-let-American-culture-get-into-you" Chaplain. He taught me elementary French, and he remembered me :)
Determined to be more focused on academics this semester, considering the final year is where the bulk of that honours verdict lies. Stresssssssssssed.
Anyways, belated photos from Ayank's graduation! Next year's my turn :)
Typing this in the rainy morning of National Day. In all 7 years, this is one National Day which doesn't feel like a National Day at all to me.
I remember going for the NDP Preview back when I was in Sec 3. Not knowing any single thing about NDP back then, kinda expected it to be all ceremonial and boring. To my surprise, it turned out to be such a joy to watch!
I remember the National Day celebrations in Cedar. Where everyone gathered in the school hall, happy that we didn't have to go for class on that day, yet only managed the reluctant crooning of various National Day songs like Stand Up for Singapore and Home. Sometimes I really wonder why many Singaporeans don't even sing their National Anthem aloud and with pride...
Did we celebrate National Day in TJ? Truthfully, I don't recall. I only remember being released early from school on the 8th of August :p We probably had some performances and that sort of thing in school.
Anyhow, I was tagged by Ddee quite a long time ago. Shall make time to do it now.

A woman like me can only survive with a husband like Jamie Oliver
Goodness gracious. Decided to start cooking in hall a few weeks ago when Ayank passed down his fridge to me (which means I could now store raw ingredients for days) and Dad bought me a mini rice cooker, but then it occured to me that I can't cook to save my own life.
Well, I even doubt that you could call what I've been trying to achieve in the kitchen cooking, since basically what I've done so far is just frying/boiling eggs, sausages and chicken nuggets. Hah.
And guess what happened when I fried my nuggets for dinner today? They turned out burnt. Yes, you read that all right. I can't even fry nuggets properly! God what have I done to deserve this.
